Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect when I call you for the first time?
You will get a free consultation where we will answer all of your questions about your case. We will explain what happens in your case from start to finish. For example, if you are involved in a car accident, we will guide you on what you need to do to get your car fixed; the process of getting medical treatment; what to do if you do not have medical insurance; what you should and shouldn’t say to the insurance adjuster; and the process when you complete your medical treatment; as well as any other questions you may have.
Do I need to have paperwork or anything ready before I call you?
No. Don’t feel any pressure to reach out and just tell us what happened. We can answer your questions and let you know if you have a case and how we can help. This is all free and you don’t have to sign anything until you’re ready to. However, in order to start your claim, we would need some important information such as the date of accident; insurance information; police report number (if applicable); and names of medical providers. The more information we have the better we can answer your questions.
What happens during a ‘free consultation’?
During your free telephone consultation you’ll get to speak to an experienced personal injury attorney. During that call, we will answer as many of your questions as possible. The most common questions we see are related to your claim including dealing with the insurance company, getting proper treatment, and how your case is handled from start to finish.
This is when your Shuman Legal® attorney will tell you if you have a case and what the next steps will be. The call can take anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes depending on your needs and case.
Do I have to come into the office for my consultation or can we do it all online?
No, you do not need to come to the office for your consultation or perhaps at all during your case. We will be happy to answer all of your questions on the phone. When you’re ready to sign contracts, you can also do that easily from either email or through your cell phone’s text messaging. All of your attorney consultations can be even through zoom if you want.
The short answer is, you’re always welcome in the office. However, you only need to come in when you want to.
How do I sign paperwork if I don’t go to the office?
You can sign the paperwork on your phone with your finger! You can also choose to receive our paperwork by e-mail; fax or mail as well as in our office to sign. We make it very easy and simple.
Who will I be meeting with?
After we get some basic information regarding your claim, you will meet with one of our experienced lawyers to answer all of your questions. Each of our attorneys has their own specialty so, depending on the type of case, you will speak to the attorney best suited to meet your needs. For example, if you have a workers compensation case then you’ll most likely speak with Shuman’s workers compensation lawyer, Rachel Peter.
How long does the consultation normally take?
We can’t tell you exactly how long you’ll be speaking to your attorney. These consultations take as long as is necessary to answer all of your questions! Please plan on at least 15 minutes and then leave yourself a full hour in case things run a little long. The more complex your case, the longer you’ll want to talk to the attorney and answer questions.
What if I’m most comfortable speaking in Spanish? Do I need to bring an interpreter?
No, you don’t need to bring anyone along to speak with your attorney in Spanish. Most of our attorneys and staff are at least bilingual. We actually have people who speak 6+ different languages in our office.
If I want to hire my lawyer what happens then?
We can send you our paperwork to your phone where you can sign with your finger. The whole process takes less than a minute. You can also choose to receive our paperwork by e-mail; fax or mail as well as in our office to sign. We make it very easy and simple.
